Most students should begin the college application process in the spring of their junior year. This includes researching colleges, preparing for standardized tests, and planning college visits. The actual applications are typically submitted in the fall of senior year, with most regular decision deadlines falling between January 1 and February 1.

Most counselors recommend applying to 6-10 colleges. This typically includes 2-3 reach schools (where admission is less likely), 3-4 target schools (where you have a good chance), and 2-3 safety schools (where admission is highly likely). However, quality is more important than quantity – focus on schools that are a good fit for your academic profile, interests, and goals.

Early Decision (ED) is binding – if you're accepted, you must attend that college and withdraw all other applications. You can only apply ED to one school. Early Action (EA) is non-binding – you can apply to multiple EA schools and still have until May 1 to decide where to attend. Both options typically have November deadlines with decisions in December or January.
